Overview

Student loan debt is a major burden for millions of people, creating financial stress and uncertainty about the future. This project aimed to design a digital platform that provides clarity, support, and potential relief for those navigating student loan repayment. By leveraging user-centered design principles, I created an intuitive, accessible, and informative web experience that connects users with forgiveness programs, eligibility tools, and key resources.

Problem Statement

Student loans can often feel like an overwhelming and isolating challenge. Many borrowers are unaware of available relief programs, and finding accurate information can be frustrating. My goal was to design a platform that reassures users they are not alone while simplifying the complexities of loan forgiveness and repayment options.

Research & Discovery

When presented with the opportunity to create a site for social good, I explored problems affecting people close to me. Conversations with friends and family, many of whom were struggling with student debt, highlighted a real need for a centralized, easy-to-navigate resource. I also conducted competitive research, analyzing existing financial aid websites to identify gaps in user experience and accessibility.

Ideation & Wireframing

I began by brainstorming essential features, prioritizing clarity and ease of use. I mapped out key user flows and sketched low-fidelity wireframes, iterating on layouts that would make financial information approachable. Using Figma, I gradually refined the wireframes into mid- and high-fidelity prototypes, ensuring a logical content structure and seamless navigation.

Branding & Visual Design

The visual identity of the platform was designed to evoke trust and optimism. I created a brand board centered around a calming blue color palette, symbolizing new opportunities and financial freedom. Typography choices prioritized readability, and iconography was used to guide users through complex information intuitively.

Prototyping & Interaction Design

To enhance usability, I implemented smooth transitions and animations, creating a more engaging experience. The site was structured into six primary sections, including:

  • Loan Forgiveness Programs – A breakdown of available relief options

  • Eligibility Quiz – An interactive tool to help users determine their qualification

  • General Information – Educational content explaining repayment and forgiveness

  • About, Contact, and Support Pages – Resources for additional assistance

Each interaction was designed to reduce cognitive load, making navigation intuitive even for users unfamiliar with financial terminology.

Reflection & Next Steps

This project reinforced the importance of designing with empathy, particularly when addressing high-stress topics. If I were to refine the platform further, I would enhance the quiz feature by incorporating more dynamic, personalized questions to better tailor recommendations. Additionally, user testing insights could help optimize accessibility and ensure the platform meets diverse user needs.

This project combines thoughtful UX design with a mission-driven approach to provide a practical solution for those overwhelmed by student debt. The final product is not just a website—it’s a tool that empowers users to take control of their financial future.
